Chief Justice James Allsop of Australia, Lord Justice David Richards of England and the former Justice the Hon Allan Gropper of the United States will preside over the grand finals in an international insolvency moot on 17 March 2017, after debating finals on 15 and 16 March.
This ‘grand final’ session will be held in the Federal Court of Australia’s ceremonial court, Law Courts Building, Queens Square, Sydney at 3-5pm Friday 17 March.
The moot is the Ian Fletcher International Insolvency Law Moot Competition organized by Professor Rosalind Mason of the Queensland University of Technology [QUT] in collaboration with INSOL International Sydney and the International Insolvency Institute.
It is being held in conjunction with the INSOL 2017 Tenth World Quadrennial Congress, being held from 20-23 March 2017. The moot is named in honour of Professor Ian Fletcher, an eminent scholar, internationally recognised for his outstanding achievements in the field of insolvency law.
The competition poses a hypothetical problem to challenge students’ appellate advocacy skills. After initial qualifying rounds, finals are being held in at the University of Sydney Law School Moot Courtroom.
Eight teams from around the world have secured their place in the final rounds. They have had to consider the liquidation of ‘Car Parts Manufacturing’, a company based in the hypothetical jurisdiction of ‘Nuzilia’.
The teams must progress through two further rounds with the grand final being held at the Federal Court of Australia on 17 March before the distinguished international panel of Chief Justice Allsop of the Federal Court of Australia, Lord Justice Richards of the Royal Courts of Justice, and the Hon Allan Gropper, a retired Judge of the United States Bankruptcy Court, Southern District New York.
Awards will be presented for teams, and individuals, mainly based on their oral arguments before the judges. Winners will be announced by QUT after the grand final on 17 March 2017.
