Personal insolvencies in September 2025 – a slow rise

Personal insolvencies increased marginally in September 2025, by 74, over last month – that is, there were 1,169 new personal insolvencies in September, up from 1,095 in August, and higher than the 1,025 in September 2024.

Of these, 635 were bankruptcies, 505 were debt agreements, 27 were personal insolvency agreements and 2 were insolvent deceased estates.

The proportion of debt agreements is high at 43%, encroaching upon bankruptcies (54%).  Most bankruptcies – 88% – continue to be by voluntary debtor’s petition.

The usual industries were involved, construction, health care and social assistance, and transport, postal and warehousing.

Of these September numbers, 323 were also involved in a business, comprising 43.5% of bankruptcies, and 40.7% of PIAs, a small increase from 310 in August 2025.

These are provisional figures.

AFSA has predicted only 13,000 in this 2025–26 financial year, only slightly about the 12,250 last year.

With numbers totaling 3,511 for the first quarter, the annual figure might be a bit higher.

But this is well down on the 10-year average of 19,500, and well below the 37,000 some years ago.
