Overcoming financial barriers to justice – a public debate – 26 July 2018

Dr Warren Mundy, the economist who was the Presiding Productivity Commissioner on the 2014 report on Access to Justice Arrangements, is chairing a public debate on that topic on 26 July 2018 for the Australian Academy of Law.

The particular topic is the means of overcoming the financial barriers to justice. The panellists represent cross-sections of the law – public interest advocacy, the legal profession, legal advice centres and those bringing technological advances to the law.

Financial barriers should be addressed not only by government funding, but by alternate means to deliver justice more efficiently.  Many will argue that this should be the prime focus for reducing financial barriers, that is, to reduce the costs of justice itself. That broad task falls not only upon actions taken by governments, the profession, and the courts, but also on approaches to the resolution of disputes taken by business and the community.

Dr Mundy will bring an economist’s perspective to the law’s aim of providing ‘justice for all’.

The panellists representing the law are Jonathon Hunyor CEO of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC), Doug Humphreys President of the NSW Law Society, Michael Green SC Founder of BarNet JADE and Chair of the NSW Bar’s Innovation and Technology Committee, and Anna Cody Director of the Kingsford Legal Centre.

The debate will be form 5pm to 6.30pm on level 13 Law Courts Building Sydney.  Refreshments will be served after the debate at which the chair and panellists will be available for discussion.

Registration details are on the website of the Academy of Law.
