The breadth of the concept of justice – Australian Academy of Law

Consistent with its objects, the Australian Academy of Law held a series of three public debates in 2017, in Sydney, based on the theme of ethics in law and business. They proved to be very popular, each one drawing large audiences, with many audience questions directed to the eminent panels leading the debates.

The Academy is holding a similar series in 2018 on the theme of Access to Justice.

The first – the breadth of the concept of justice – is being held on Monday 30 April 2018 in Sydney, in the Banco Court of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Level 13, Law Courts Building, Queen’s Square, from 5.30 pm to 7.00 pm.

The Chair will be the Hon Chief Justice John Pascoe AO Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia.

The Panel Members are:

  • the Hon Justice Sarah Derrington Judge of the Federal Court of Australia and President of the Australian Law Reform Commission;
  • Mr Ed Santow Commissioner, Australian Human Rights Commission;
  • Mr George Newhouse Principal Solicitor at the National Justice Project; and
  • Mr Chris Povey Chief Executive Officer, JusticeConnect.

These debates are being held in an environment where there is increasing focus on the delivery of legal services and just outcomes.  Most recently, the ALRC has called for submissions in response to its paper on the review of the family law system, and the Law Council of Australia has been active in pursuing its National Justice Project.

Please see the Academy website for further information including registration details.  The registration fee is $25 to cover the cost of refreshments.
